Each e-BODE incorporates a range of features to minimise its impact on the environment.

The large glazed areas ensure good daylighting and panels of louvred windows allow ample natural cross ventilation. Thick foil-coated insulation retains winter warmth while reflecting summer heat. The oversailing roof offers shade, protecting the modules from the sun's radiant heat, and supports a solar water heater. Rainwater tanks collect water for toilet flushing and the garden,  AAA-rated taps cut demand for mains water and energy-efficient appliances save electricity.

All houses built in NSW are now assessed under the Government's new Building Sustainability Index (BASIX). An e-BODE easily exceeds the target of reducing water consumption by 40% and energy use by 25%.
